I’d always felt that Eterna Bleach Bypass had a lot of potential due to its unique look, but none of the recipes I’d tried really clicked with me. They all tended to be a bit too grey, a bit too sterile, a bit too almost-monochromatic-but-not-quite. So I thought “why not give it a go myself?”, and set out to create a recipe that takes advantage of the sombre and toned-down mood of Eterna Bleach Bypass, but doesn’t lose itself in overly reduced saturation or harsh contrast in the process. After a fair amount of experimentation, I’m really happy with how this recipe turned out. The way it renders the greens and browns make it ideal for overcast days out nature, while the forgiving shadows grant a ton of lenience for underexposing in bright daylight. I feel that it has a classic, almost documentary-style look, that lends its subjects a wonderfully understated gravitas. In addition or alternatively to the clarity setting, I’d recommend using a weak diffusion filter. I can see this recipe having tremendous potential when combined with an old vintage lens – provided the color cast and softness of the lens aren’t too extreme. Very excited to see how you use this recipe in your own photography!
